Small cities in India are often discussed through the lens of what they lack – infrastructure, capital, institutional capacity. But what if the answer lies in what they can make? The Fab City model, pioneered globally and now rooted in India through Maker’s Asylum’s Hardware & Design Village in Goa, offers a framework where cities progressively become locally productive – able to make, repair, and circulate resources within their communities rather than depending on distant supply chains. This workshop brings together practitioners working at the intersection of urban systems, distributed manufacturing, and climate resilience to ask: Can the maker movement be civic infrastructure, not just creative culture?
